What can I expect from the procedure?
- The sleeve gastrectomy can be used as a primary operation, or for patients with a body mass index greater than 60, it may be used as the first part of a 2-stage operation. It can later be followed by a gastric bypass or a duodenal switch once the patient loses significant weight.
- The 2-stage operation can have substantial advantages for specific individuals who have BMI’s greater than 60… mostly safety related.
Is the Sleeve Gastrectomy Safe?
- Since this operation does not involve any "rerouting" or reconnecting the intestines, it is a simpler and safer operation than the gastric bypass or the duodenal switch.
Benefits
- It can be safer than the Gastric Bypass for patients with body mass index greater than 60.
- There is no foreign prosthetic device in the patient’s body.
- No ulcers or dumping syndrome.
Cost
- Currently, most insurance companies do not cover the Sleeve Gastrectomy. The cost to the patient can be approximately $15 - $18K.
