Vishal was born in New Delhi, India on January 2, 1970 and was raised in a small town called Timarpur.  His mother was a school teacher and his father worked for an airline company.  Along with his brother, who is three years older, the four of them lived in a 400 sq ft. apartment.  In 1979 his parents had the opportunity that was available to only a lucky few; which was to move to America.  They had their doubts about starting a new life in a new country at middle-age, but decided to risk it searching for a brighter future for their children.  They moved to Queens, New York when Vishal was nine years old.  His parents did odd end jobs for several years to make ends meet.  Growing up, they instilled in him strong family values, a thirst for education, and a desire to help those less fortunate.  In 1992, Vishal received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Stony Brook University in New York.  He was accepted to New York Medical College where he received his Medical Degree in 1996.  Following this, he did a five year residency in general surgery at New York Methodist hospital often working upto 120 hour weeks.  There he gained vast exposure to general surgery, trauma, vascular, thoracic, and plastic surgery.  Infact, Vishal was geared on becoming a plastic surgeon until his exposure to Bariatric Surgery.  He assisted two other surgeons in open bariatric cases, and witnessed first hand how drastically their lives improved shortly thereafter.   No other field offered this level of gratification.  It had  enough of an impact on Vishal, that he stopped pursuing plastic surgery and decided to pursue a career as a bariatric surgeon.  After finishing his general surgery residency in 2001, Dr. Mehta was amongst the first few to be trained from a handful of bariatric surgery fellowships.  After finishing his 1 year fellowship, he started practicing, formed the Mehta Bariatric Center, dedicating his time and focus on the treatment of obesity.

Vishal’s technical skills as a laparoscopic bariatric surgeon has gained him a reputation amongst his peers, however, his focus has never been just about surgery.  He’s more interested in being a part of his patients lives as they lose weight and all new possibilities start awakening.  He can relate to his patients as they start discovering a whole new world, as he himself started out from a small town in India, and is a living example of the possibilities life offers.  Vishal is always making sure his patients are staying motivated, eating right, changing undesired behavior patterns, exercising, and more than anything… enjoying life.  He makes it a point of always being easily reachable.  He gives his patients his personal cell phone number, and even lists it on his website.  Always one to push others and himself, he lives a diverse lifestyle as portrayed below.
