What is the LAP-BAND or REALIZE-BAND?

• Both the LAP-BAND and the REALIZE-BAND are Gastric Bands for weight loss surgery. They are made by different manufacturers, but work essentially the same way.
  
• Both are wrapped around the top part of the stomach limiting the amount of food one can eat, thereby causing weight loss.
  
• Both can be performed using virtually incision-less method using a single hidden incision in the belly-button.
  

What can I expect from the lap-band procedure?

• The lap-band procedure is performed laparoscopically, usually as an outpatient.
  
• Minimal discomfort and downtime.
  
• General anesthesia is used.
  
• The procedure takes about 40 minutes to perform.
  
• You will be discharged on a liquid diet the same evening of surgery.

What can I expect after treatment?

• Most patients return to work within 3-4 days.
  
• Liquid diet is started the evening of surgery and is advanced to solid diet over the next few weeks. Our dietician will guide you every step of the way.
  
• Weight loss can be 50-60% of your extra weight. It can often be higher if you eat a high protein, low fat, and low carbohydrate diet, stick to small portions, and exercise routinely.
  

Is the Lap-band Safe?

• Overall the lap-band is much safer than the RNY Gastric Bypass.
  
• There is no stomach cutting or intestinal re-routing.
